Occupant Fire Procedures

Upon discovery of fire:

  • Alarm the occupants of the building. Activate the fire alarm system by using the nearest pull station and leave the fire area.
  • Call Markham Fire Services by dialing 9-1-1 from any phone. Never assume that this has been done.
  • Give the correct building address and location of the fire and your name.
  • Close but do not lock doors behind you as you leave classrooms or offices.
  • If possible call security by dialing 88 from any internal phone in a safe location.
  • Use nearest designated emergency exit to leave the building.
  • Do not use the elevators.
  • Do not use the atrium stairs.
  • Once outside proceed to a designated Evacuation Assembly Area.
  • Await further instructions from authorities. Do not re-enter the building until it is declared safe to do so by a Fire Official.

Markham Campus is equipped with a silent first stage, audible second stage fire alarm. When a fire alarm or detection device, such as a pull station, is activated building occupants on the floor of activation will hear the following message:

“Your Attention Please. Your Attention Please. A life safety device has been triggered in this area. We are investigating the cause, please listen for further updates."

Building supervisory staff and Security will investigate the cause of the triggered life safety device. If it is determined in the investigation that a fire emergency does not exist, building occupants on the floor of activation will hear the following Stand Down message:

“Your Attention Please. The source of the alarm has been identified. No emergency exists. Thank you for your attention and co-operation.”

If the fire alarm proceeds to the second stage building occupants on all floors will see the white fire strobes flashing and hear the evacuation tones for one minute accompanied by the following

Evacuation message:

“Your Attention Please. Your Attention Please. The Fire Safety System has been activated. For your safety, please evacuate the building immediately using the nearest emergency exit door. Do not use the elevators and do not re-enter the area until authorized by Emergency Response Personnel."
  • Occupants must immediately evacuate the building using the nearest emergency exit.
  • Staff must direct students to evacuate.
  • Close but do not lock doors behind you as you leave classrooms or offices.
  • Assist those with special needs/mobility issues during the evacuation, or help them to a Markham refuge site.
  • Use the nearest designated emergency exit - DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS OR THE ATRIUM STAIRS.
  • Check doors for heat, if hot to the touch - DO NOT OPEN.
  • Once outside proceed to a designated Evacuation Assembly Area.
  • Await further instructions from authorities. Do not re-enter the building until it is declared safe to do so by a Fire Official.
  • Stay calm.

Before entering a stairway, open the door carefully and:

  • Check doors for heat, if hot to the touch - DO NOT OPEN.
  • If there is no smoke, use the stairway to leave the building.
  • If there is smoke, do not enter the stairway, close the stairway door. Go to alternate exit and again open the door carefully.
  • If there is no smoke here, use the stairway to leave the building.

Once inside the stairway:

  • If you encounter smoke on your way down the stairs, do not continue!
  • Leave the stairway onto the closest available floor area, and proceed to an alternate stairway. Open the door carefully and if there is no smoke, continue down the stairway and leave the building.
  • If you cannot use any stairway to exit the building, go into a safe smoke-free room, preferably with a phone and a window. Close the door and call for help.
  • Never go to the roof, smoke rises! Doors to the roof are locked and you could become trapped.
  • Remember, stay low to the ground if you are in a smoke filled environment. The air is cleaner near floor level.
