2014 Senecans of Distinction Awards
A Juno and Grammy nominated, internationally-renowned singer and songwriter, Jully is one of Seneca's highest profile alumni. She has appeared in several Seneca ad campaigns and volunteered her time as a performer at TEDx Seneca College. She has also been featured in a Seneca alumni video and was a Premier’s Award nominee.
Recently named Vice-President of Flight Operations for Porter Airlines, Piyush is also a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) member for the School of Aviation and Fight Technology and has hired countless graduates at Porter, along with providing work placements and internships. He has been featured in RED magazine, in a Seneca Alumni video, and has appeared as a guest speaker at the annual aviation graduation dinner.
For close to 32 years, Bijan has been the Vice-President of Operations for Hakim Optical, and has continually helped focus the Seneca College Ophthalmic Dispensing program to more effectively reflect the needs of the industry and its employers. This past year, Hakim optical hired 15 full-time students in the co-op program and Bijan continues to contact Seneca for additional students when positions become available.
As a business development advisor for the Regional Municipality of York, Gordon works to attract international and domestic companies to York Region and supports local companies with their expansion initiatives. Gordon is a recent Seneca Alumni Premier’s Award nominee and his dedication to Seneca shines through as he willingly returns to campus several times per year to mentor and share insights with current students in all International Business disciplines.
As Vice-President of Landpower Real Estate Ltd. in Markham, Henry oversees multi-million dollar transactions with clients from around the world. He gives back to the College as a member of the Alumni Council and has donated resources to the International office. He has been featured in RED magazine, was a Premier’s Award nominee, participated in a TTC Seneca Ad campaign and has been featured in alumni videos, both in English and Mandarin. Recently, Henry started a named award for International Students.
Brookfield Properties Management Corporation
One of North America's largest commercial real estate companies, the corporation owns, develops and manages premier office properties across Canada. For the last four years, they have been a co-op partner for Building Systems and Mechanical Engineering Technology students while providing scholarships and awards to students who succeed in the program.
After more than three decades of service to Seneca College, former Senior Vice-President Cindy Hazell was named the first Seneca Professor Emeritus in 2012. The life-long title symbolizes the enormous respect she earned from her colleagues and the tremendous contribution she has made to the field of post-secondary education and to Seneca. To mark her retirement, Cindy established an award in her name for non-direct students at the College.
The recently retired Faculty of Continuing Education Chair, Susan Horne was a driving force behind the first two Campaign for Students campaigns, an annual fundraising initiative to support students with financial need. She organized many fundraising events, sales and awareness activities and is also a long-time donor to the College.
Nursing Jamaica Outreach Program
Professor, Marcia Brown founded the program in 2006 where two years later nursing students began travelling to Kingston, Jamaica where a need for nursing outreach had been identified. The nursing outreach activities addressed health care needs for individuals and families in a variety of settings including, health clinics, homes for teenage mothers, a HIV/AIDS centre, and a cancer care institute.
Celebrating 10 years as an affinity partner with Seneca Alumni, MBNA has provided credit cards for students and alumni with proceeds going to the Alumni Endowed Bursary. They have contributed and supported numerous Alumni activities and have created a sense of school pride with their Seneca designed cards and unique giveaways.
Seneca Security – David Mitchell, John Curley and Taylor Unwin
These members of the security team at Newnham Campus, all played a significant role in saving the life of a student on September 12, 2014. They risked their own lives by running on to the highway to stop traffic as the student was hit by the door of a swerving car. Luckily nobody was seriously injured. Both Security officers performed first aid while waiting for Emergency Services to arrive.
