Dear Colleagues:

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Larry DeFlorio in 2015, a friend and colleague who is remembered for his big smile and generous heart.

Larry was faculty in the School of Communication Arts here at Seneca from 1997 to 2005, and served as Coordinator of the Digital Media Centre, which became the Animation Arts Centre in 2003. Under the stewardship of Larry, the faculty and staff of the Animation Arts Centre formed a vision of excellence that continues to pervade today.

Larry DeFloiro

Larry knew the importance of innovation and collaboration. He led Seneca’s contribution on the film Ryan with director Chris Landreth, the National Film Board of Canada, and Copperheart Entertainment, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short in 2005, and brought momentum and acclaim to the Animation Arts Centre.

While at Seneca, Larry was always surrounded by students, helping them develop their talents, realize their passions, and find their way in the animation, gaming and visual effects industry. With the ability to see the best in everyone, Larry was a teacher and mentor to many.

His guidance changed the lives of numerous students and graduates. Patrick C. N. Wong, 3D Animation (Softimage) ’00, explained, “Larry was my mentor, my instructor, and my boss. He taught me the skills and life lessons that helped me get where I am today. I would not have been in a career that I love without him. He always picked me up when I was down and shone light during dark times. Like Larry, I will help and teach those around me. I am proud to be one of Larry's apprentices.”

Larry’s generosity of spirit and commitment to supporting students and graduates continues with the establishment of the Larry DeFlorio Leadership Award. This new award is being established through donations as a tribute to his vision, leadership, and contribution to Seneca life, students and alumni.

With the support of Larry’s friends and peers, the goal is to fundraise $25,000 to establish an endowment fund in his memory. Please consider joining me in making a donation towards the endowment. Anything you can contribute will help us reach our goal.

Making a donation is easy:

  • Give online by credit card or by payroll deduction. Click “Awards and Bursaries” and select the “Larry DeFlorio Leadership Award”
  • To give by cheque, please make your cheque payable to “Seneca College” and send it to Katie Colvin, Advancement & Alumni, Seneca College, Markham Campus, 8 The Seneca Way, Markham, ON  L3R 5Y1
  • Call 416.491.5050 ext. 77285 to give over the phone

Your donation will help to recognize students who perform well academically, and who also demonstrate leadership, compassion, personal integrity, and generosity. The hope is to encourage students to be well-rounded leaders when they graduate from Seneca’s Animation Arts Centre.

The work produced by our students over the years continue to be an indication to the longevity of Larry’s initial vision and leadership, even as it continues to evolve with the changing conditions of the animation industry, and under the leadership of our faculty and staff today. Please join me, and honour his impact on our College and our lives by making a donation to the Larry DeFlorio Leadership Award.

Thank you for helping to continue Larry’s legacy.
