Birgit is a Registered Nurse at Mackenzie Health Hospital (Richmond Hill) and Credit Valley Hospital (Mississauga), currently completing a Master of Education at York University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and received Summa Cum Laude distinction in 2016. She is also a sole-support mother to her five-year-old daughter.
“My life is exciting, stressful and rewarding all at the same time,” says Birgit.
She was 25 when she came to Canada from her native Nigeria and started in Seneca’s Collaborative BScN Degree Program with York University / Seneca College the same year. Seneca’s financial support helped Birgit persevere through trying circumstances. But, what she lacked in income, she made up for in drive and mental focus.
“I will be forever grateful to Seneca for igniting the giant within me,” says Birgit. “I did my part as a student and the professors did more than their share as mentors and supporters.”
Two weeks after her Seneca convocation, Birgit wrote her NCLEX-RN board exam – a moment she had been preparing for since the first day of class. One month later, she was working in her desired field.
“After attending Seneca and now doing something I love, it is all the more meaningful,” she says. “There’s nothing else I could be doing.”
Birgit is not only making a difference in the workplace but continues to work tirelessly supporting her community through volunteer efforts at her church and by remaining a positive, motivational influence for her friends and daughter. She’s also taken time to mentor students at Seneca.
“The program is challenging but it prepares you for a career,” she says. “There are no shortcuts in life. Make the most of your educational opportunities and don’t shy away from learning new things. Create a life that’s meaningful for you, whatever that meaning is ... And enjoy it.”
