Overview

This program is designed to complement intermediate accounting knowledge with an opportunity to obtain a Recognition of Achievement in Taxation. The program adds an advanced tax specialization to students' strong knowledge of accounting, providing them with credentials valued by employers. Graduates will be prepared for careers in small, medium and self-employed businesses.

Taxation Regulation and Reporting

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skill to complete personal and business tax forms. Students will learn how to respond to and apply the fundamental provisions of laws that affect taxation of a business and their personal situation. The emphasis will be on practical aspects of compliance.

Personal Taxation

Prerequisite(s):

ACC517 Intermediate Accounting II and a working knowledge of microcomputers.

The purpose of this course is to provide Accounting and Finance students with a good working knowledge of the current provisions of the Canadian Income Tax Act as it applies to individuals including tax planning.

ACC642
Corporate Taxation

Prerequisite(s):

ACC540 - Personal Taxation

Taxation II is the second part of two courses in taxation for Accounting and Finance students. The aim of the course is to provide students with a good working knowledge of the current provisions of the Canadian Income Tax Act as it applies to corporations and individuals. Emphasis is placed on the concepts underlying these provisions rather than on the computations required to implement them, although such computations are reviewed in the context of the Federal T2 Tax Return.

Eligibility for the Recognition of Achievement is based on the completion of the 3 courses. Prerequisites are  optional. Once courses are completed, submit a  Request for Recognition of Achievement.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the certificate, you will be prepared to reliably demonstrate the ability to:

  • Determine when businesses should or should not register for GST/HST and understand the various classifications applied to businesses
  • Apply the relevant rules in the administration of GST/HST for Ontario businesses, including filing requirements and the assessment, objections and appeals processes
  • Calculate input tax credits(ITCs) and HST/GST payable
  • Prepare GST/HST returns for Ontario business
  • Determine income and tax liability of individuals, Identify and explain issues arising from the submission of individual income tax returns, discuss and answer questions relating to tax planning for individuals
  • Identify and classify the different types of income of a corporation
  • Determine the tax payable by corporations
  • Discuss and answer questions relating to tax planning for individuals and corporations
  • Prepare T1 returns using CANTAX software for individuals and sole proprietors
  • Prepare T2 returns using CANTAX software for corporations

Completion

Recognition of Achievement

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Recognition of Achievement Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Recognition of Achievement will be sent to you electronically.
