Overview

The Underwriting Training Program (UTP) offered through Seneca College, in partnership with LOGiQ 3, is designed to provide professional training to enhance opportunities for career advancement or business development in the life insurance underwriting industry. This program will provide you with a strong overall understanding of the factors to consider in evaluating the risks involved in reviewing life insurance applications.

Delivered completely online in a self-study format, the Underwriting Training Program covers essential areas of mortality risk data including medical history, health conditions, and lifestyle behaviours.

UTP is recognized by the Institute of Advanced Financial Education (IAFE) towards their professional development program and endorsed by the Life Office Management Association (LOMA).

What is life underwriting?

The role of an underwriter, determining risks and policy terms, is at the heart of every life insurance company's operations. For individuals who are highly analytical and detail-oriented, underwriting is a sound career choice. Training and continuing education are important throughout the career of an underwriter due to medical advances and new diagnostic tools. Underwriters need to know when and where to look further for information, so an in-depth understanding of the human anatomy and disease process and treatment are vital for a successful career in underwriting.

Underwriters must be able to review the medical documentation, family history, lifestyle behaviours and financial background of potential policy holders to determine the appropriate mortality risk classification to distinguish the healthy individuals from the individuals with a risk of early mortality. Being an underwriter is a challenging and rewarding career in an industry with great career prospects.

UTP101
LOGiQ3 Proper File Documentation
Availability

Proper documentation of a case allows the underwriter to collect the facts, think through the facts and analyze the facts to be able to properly assess and classify the risk. Once the underwriter has classified the risk and made a decision, it is very important that the underwriter is able to justify their decision - i.e. how did they arrive at that decision? Being able to collect the proper facts is important since this is the first step in the underwriting process. If the underwriter does not have the correct information they are unable to classify the risk. Included is a Medical Terminology document with terms, abbreviations, definitions, and descriptions of common medical terms Underwriters will encounter. Video Duration: 56 minutes, Course work: approx. 2 hours.
