Seneca College Certificate


Overview

The Innovation Leader Certificate program is innovative curriculum that experientially engages participants in entrepreneurship, design thinking, and agile product development methodology. The certificate equips participants with transferable skills in the methods to support rapid ideation, validation, and prototyping and to successfully pioneer new solutions by unlocking individual innovation potential. In this certificate program, participants learn best practices and methods for designing effective new products, services, strategies, and processes. The certificate is ideal for anyone seeking to build entrepreneurial and innovation skills or a portfolio to support entrepreneurial endeavours. 

The curriculum for this certificate program has been developed by the Future Design School (FDS) as a comprehensive and modular innovation curriculum that experientially engages participants in entrepreneurship, design thinking, and agile development methods. The delivery format will be hybrid and can include compressed, accelerated, early-morning, and custom formats offered through Seneca's Faculty of Continuing Education and delivered by FDS instructors. The certificate program will also include experiential opportunities for the participants that include visits with leading start-up companies and thought leaders in the innovation space. 

Entry Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent;

OR

  • Mature Student Status (age 19 or older).

Curriculum

INL101
Introduction to Empathetic Design

This course is an introduction to design thinking for developing user-centered solutions for a product, strategy, and process. Students will use qualitative research focused on what users do, say, feel, and think to understand deeply a user?s perspective, motivations, and aspirations. In this course, students will learn to use a beginner?s toolkit for rapid design sprints.

Methods for User Research and Testing
Availability
 

In this course, students acquire a toolkit for user research collection and the skills to synthesize the acquired data into meaningful insights that drive design. Students will develop the skill to focus on salient information that surfaces from the data and will learn how to test and validate assumptions. This course explores how to leverage these methods in a practical manner with real audiences.

Students will explore the importance of motivation, empowerment, and a shared vision for driving innovation and change. In this course, students will learn to be the catalyzer, mentor, and driver of change.

Advanced Management Practices for Innovation Projects

In this course, students are challenged to deepen the skills in cultivating the abilities to drive forward innovation. Students will learn how to manage obstacles, clear the path towards innovation success, and operationalize innovation projects using industry-standard tools.

Essential Skills for Innovation Leadership

In this course, students will explore the relationship between leading innovation and advocacy and ongoing stakeholder management. Students will learn how to engage cross-functional teams, build key performance metrics, and manage rapid change in an optimistic manner. Practical opportunities to develop and showcase leadership will be expected.

Crafting Compelling Narratives (Pitching Your Ideas)

In this course, students explore the importance of using persuasive communication strategies when creating messages and marketing material for different audiences for new and innovative ideas. Students will learn how to tell the story of innovation in a persuasive and engaging manner that drives sales of products or buy-in on new initiatives of strategy or process.

Program Outcomes

By the end of this program, the participant has reliably demonstrated the ability to :

  1. Support entrepreneurial opportunities by conducting market research, user tests, and prototypes to identify potential users that would adopt new products, strategies, and processes.
  2. Develop strategies that test and validate assumptions and biases when generating ideas and recommendations, determining key performance metrics that drive innovation, and creating prototypes, user tests, and business models.
  3. Develop evidence-based business models for new products, strategies, and processes.
  4. Guide the development of a product, strategy, or process by employing agile product management principles to define priorities and strategies to address challenges.
  5. Generate user-centered solutions for a product, strategy, or process by using design principles and methodologies.
  6. Make sound judgments when developing new products, strategies, or processes by using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  7. Support the communication for a product, strategy, or process to different audiences and stakeholders by using persuasive narrative tools and techniques.
  8. Support operationalizing projects by identifying obstacles and challenges, and drivers and mentors for cross-functional teams by using leadership theory and management practices.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October) and Spring (June).

Minimum Performance for Graduation

Students will only be eligible to graduate with a Seneca College certificate or diploma if they have maintained an overall good standing in their current program of study. Students in degree programs will be eligible to graduate when they have obtained an average of C (2.5 GPA) in courses in the main field of study, and an average of C (2.0 GPA) in all other courses.
