Overview

Prepare for a career in activation in elderly care, group activation and seniors' recreation in long term care, a variety of community settings for the aged and in hospitals. Focus on the achievement of optimal mental and social functioning of seniors. Students will study approaches that maintain or improve functional and cognitive capabilities of seniors' daily living.

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that students possess a diploma or degree in recreation and leisure or kinesiology or working experience in a related field.

This course focuses on the various techniques that the Activationist can adopt to develop appropriate group and client specific activities. Share resources and learn about health considerations, cultural beliefs and cognitive functioning levels that can affect the planning of seniors' activities.

Exchange program ideas and resources with others in the field of Activation. Prepared scenarios provide opportunity to identify the need for an create therapeutic activities, promote interaction, apply appropriate leadership skills, and use seniors as co-leaders.

Working and Communicating in Medical Settings

Learn successful communication techniques human relation skills, elements of medical settings including hospitals, client service, and working safely. Students will learn to protect patient confidentiality as well as be introduced to the hospital chart and potential responsibilities of a health office professional

Program Outcomes

  1. Practice in a professional manner within an ethical framework.
  2. Develop and sustain therapeutic relationships with seniors and their families.
  3. Support seniors and their activities as part of a team.
  4. Create effective activation programming utilizing appropriate resources.
  5. Support therapeutic activities for seniors and achievement of their positive self-images through the use of a variety of programming tools.
  6. Develop strategies to manage seniors' activities utilizing effective communication, coaching and leadership skills, and with processes and tools that effectively maximize resources.
  7. Develop strategies for personal and professional development that enhance activation career opportunities.

Completion

Recognition of Achievement

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Recognition of Achievement Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Recognition of Achievement will be mailed to you.
