The Fire Sprinkler Design will be of interest to existing designers who want to upgrade their skills as well as future designers who want to enter the field. The courses will also be useful for AHJ's (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and those who perform plans review.

Introduction to Sprinklers

This course provides students with a basic understanding of the requirements for design, fabrication, installation and approval of automatic sprinkler systems. Relevant codes and standards are included with a special emphasis placed on the NFPA13 general code.

SPR490
Sprinklers II
Availability
 

Prerequisite(s):

SPR195 or equivalent

This course is a continuation of SPR195 and covers topics that include wet and dry system operation, high piled storage, rack storage, standpipe systems and residential systems.

CAD295
Intro to Autocad
Availability
 

This course includes installation, navigating the editing screen, setting up a drawing, inserting and editing entities, using object snaps, managing files, controlling layers, using coordinates, dimensioning and plotting.

HDS395
Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Calculation
Availability
 

This course covers classic fluid mechanics and how to apply hydraulic calculation techniques to the design of sprinkler systems using NFPA 13 standards. Computer software will be used to predict system hydraulic performance.

CSD595
Computerized Sprinkler Design
Availability
 

Prerequisite(s):

CAD295 or equivalent

This course is a continuation of CAD295 and builds on basic AutoCAD skills. Students learn how to design sprinkler systems in an AutoCAD environment using SprinkCAD.

FIP593
Fire Pumps
Availability
 

Prerequisite(s):

HDS395

This course is a continuation of HDS395. Students will investigate positive displacement and centrifugal pumps as they are used in fire protection. Pump components, ancillary devices, electric motors, diesel engines, controllers, fittings and valves will be covered. Students will consult NFPA20 and NFPA25 standards regarding installation, acceptance, maintenance and testing.

STK595
Stocklisting
Availability
 

This course provides students with the skills necessary to read and interpret sprinkler drawings and symbols. Students will produce detailed sprinkler system stocklists by hand and with computer software.

Methods of Delivery

Internet access will be required to complete this program. These courses are offered via correspondence only.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October) and Spring (June).
