This Ontario College Graduate certificate program has been designed to meet the needs of individuals who have already received their Early Childhood Education Diploma (or its equivalent) and wish to pursue professional specialization. The program provides Early Childhood Educators with the knowledge and techniques necessary to work in supervisory/administrative positions.

The curriculum focuses on communication strategies, staff supervision and leadership skills, financial management, marketing, advocacy and professionalism in child care settings.

This part-time program consists of six professional courses and 210 hours of supervised field placement.

Graduates may be employed as supervisors/administrators in a variety of Early Childhood Education settings.

Entry Requirements

  1. Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent.
  2. It is advised students have one year post graduation work experience, though students can begin directly upon graduation from their ECE Diploma's.

  1. Students should be prepared to arrange the time required to complete fieldwork placement. In most cases the fieldwork requirement may be completed in the student's workplace with the approval of the Seneca field placement instructor. Field placement hours may be completed over two semesters as arranged with Seneca Field Placement Instructor. Students must complete a minimum of 4 courses before beginning field placement. Field placement may be taken concurrently with the student's final two courses.
  2. If you have completed or wish to complete courses at another post-secondary institution please speak with the Academic Program Manager, Joanne.Bonnet@senecacollege.ca, to ensure that these courses are approved.

Registrants must submit a completed Seneca medical form, a current police reference check (working with vulnerable people), a Ministry of Education Work/Education placement form (WEPA) and a current First Aid/CPR Certificate before entering field placement.

Communication Strategies-Early Childhood Education


An Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent and approval of the Coordinator.

(Formerly ECD701)

This course is designed to assist students in developing skills in implementing a variety of communication formats and strategies related to the responsibilities of a supervisor/administrator in an Early Childhood setting. Participants will also examine the role of the supervisor/administrator in working with parents, a board of directors, other professionals and the community.

A variety of communication formats will be reviewed including surveys, business letters, policies and procedures for an early childhood setting. In addition, students will examine promotional literature.

Curriculum Design and Implementation

This course focuses on curriculum and instructional design as they relate to various philosophies of Early Childhood Education. The application of the Child Care and Early Years Act will be discussed and the supervisor/administrator role in developing curriculum and philosophy.

Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to examine and develop learning materials. Emphasis will be placed on teaching principles and practices, evaluation of the physical environment and curriculum evaluation.

Advocacy and Professionalism in ECE

This course explores professionalism in the context of societal values, ethics, professional support systems, current political issues and trends surrounding childcare. The student is expected to formulate an informed position regarding childcare issues in Ontario and Canada.

Management Leadership Skills & Staff Development


ECE Diploma or equivalency and attend a manadatory orientation session

This course explores effective communication and theories of leadership. Through a process of self-evaluation, students will develop a professional leadership style appropriate to the role of an administrator of an early childhood education setting. Students will develop techniques to hire and maintain quality staff in an Early Childhood Education program.

Marketing Early Childhood Education

This course provides participants with a basic understanding of marketing principles and practices as they apply to an early childhood education setting. Participants will prepare, implement and evaluate marketing strategies as well as formulate marketing budgets. Participants examine a variety of advertising and selling techniques. Interpersonal and communication skills as they pertain to ECE marketing will be discussed.

Computer Application & Financial Planning in ECE


An Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent. A basic understanding of Excel and Microsoft Word.

Students are given a comprehensive overview of developing a financial plan to incorporate the requirements of a licenced ECE program. This involves the use of computer software.

ECE Administration: Field Practicum


Successful completion of at least four of the Early Childhood Education Post-Diploma Advanced Administration courses or approval from the ECE co-ordinator.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be permitted to complete this practicum at their work place providing this is approved by the Program Coordinator.

Students will integrate theory and practice by supervising in an ECE program Centre. Over an extended time period, students will demonstrate supervisory skills within the specified framework of their individual settings. Students are required to complete all required documentation including a Seneca Medical Form and apply for a Police Check through OESC before they begin field placement. Please consult the field placement manual for forms. Students must have access to their Seneca email account to maintain communication with the Seneca supervisor.

Program Outcomes

The objectives of the Early Childhood Education Administration Program are:

  1. To supervise the design, implementation and evaluation of a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment, which reflects a philosophical orientation and responds to the needs of young children and their families.
  2. To administer child-care programs according to required financial management standards and conform to the Childcare and Early Years Act of Ontario. Please Note: The C.C.E.Y.A requires supervisors to have at least two years experience working in childcare.
  3. To design, implement and evaluate marketing strategies specific to ECE programs.
  4. To evaluate staff performance and identify professional development opportunities that respond to staff training needs.
  5. To utilize a computer system in the management of an Early Childhood Education setting.
  6. To develop and demonstrate a variety of effective communication techniques.
  7. To display a professional leadership style appropriate to the role of an administrator of an Early Childhood Education program.
  8. To develop and implement policies, systems and procedures that support the developmental needs and safety of young children and ensure the provision of high quality care and conform to the Childcare and Early Years Act of Ontario.
  9. To build and foster relationships with families, boards of directors, volunteers and community resources.


When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October) and Spring (June).

Minimum Performance for Graduation

Students will only be eligible to graduate with a Seneca College certificate or diploma if they have maintained an overall good standing in their current program of study. Students in degree programs will be eligible to graduate when they have obtained an average of C (2.5 GPA) in courses in the main field of study, and an average of C (2.0 GPA) in all other courses.
