Overview

Summer Intensive Writing Classes provide students the opportunity to fast track through the various ESL writing levels. These 3-week sessions are held at Newnham Campus in July and August, on weekdays from 9 am-1 pm. For more information, please look for ESL932 N1J, ESL933 N1J and ESL934 N1J for the July classes and ESL932 N1K, ESL933 N1K and ESL934 N1K for August classes at ESL Writing.

ESL931 or English Assessment

In this course, students will focus on the structure of a well-developed paragraph to clearly communicate their ideas. Instruction in sentence structure, grammar and mechanics helps students develop key writing skills. Self-editing, summarizing and paraphrasing are also taught to prepare for further academic writing.

Composition III

ESL932 or English Assessment

In this course, students will review paragraph development and move towards a five paragraph essay. The focus will be on prewriting activities, the essay outline, development of a strong thesis statement, supporting paragraphs with clear topic sentences, appropriate support and details, and an effective conclusion. Grammar instruction will be included to enable students to identify errors and edit accordingly. Critical thinking skills will be developed through analysis of readings, summaries and group discussions.

In this course, students will review and refine the structure of an academic essay. Fundamental writing skills and strategies will be taught and practiced through reading and writing activities that foster critical thinking, vocabulary building and the expression of ideas in an effective and concise manner.
