Overview

The revised Japanese Languages Proficiency Test (JLPT), held by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, is the most widely used and respected Japanese test in the world.  Advanced pedagogical research and testing theory is applied to measure and certify the language proficiency of non-native speakers of Japanese in various sectors of society.

JLPT offers five levels: N5 to N1.   Levels N5 and N4 measure the basic understanding of Japanese that is mostly learned in the classroom. N3 bridges the gap between the lower and more advanced N2 and N1 levels, which measure the understanding and use of the Japanese language in a broad range of real, everyday situations.
