Overview

Students in this part-time program will acquire the knowledge and skills for career opportunities in hospitals, surgical centres and health care settings related to the sterilization, preparation and storage of equipment, instruments and supplies. Students will learn critical techniques in safe handling of instrumentation, infection control and aseptic techniques. All courses are theory based and delivered online. This program does not offer a practicum.

Career Opportunities

Medical devices reprocessing departments provide a vital role in the medical environment, and there is a growing demand for people trained in medical device reprocessing. Graduates of this program will be prepared to work as medical device reprocessing technicians in a variety of settings from acute care hospitals to veterinary clinics.

MDR100
Medical Terminology
Availability
 

Medical terminology will assist students in developing the language required to communicate effectively in a medical setting. Word structure, diagnostic procedures and pharmacology as well as common medical terminology related to twelve body systems will be studied. You must achieve a grade of 65% to pass this course.

Human Relations and Professional Practice

What makes people tick . . . and how to keep them going! Human Relations will improve your understanding of people. Students will discuss motivation, handling conflict, delegation, building morale and more. Studying these topics will give the student practical insights into handling people more effectively and improve your overall performance.

MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTION CONTROL

This course introduces the student to the sterile processing role and environment, microbiology, infection control, aseptic technique and workplace environmental hazards.

Identification, Care and Handling of Instrument

This course introduces the student to instrument classification, specifics of proper handling techniques and recognition of common problems related to instrument usage.

MDR104
Decontamination, Principles, Procedures & Practice

Prerequisite(s):

MDR100, MDR102 & MDR103

In this course students are introduced to the principles of decontamination including instrument/equipment disassembly, various methods of cleaning/disinfection, use of decontamination equipment (automated), proper workflow, standard precautions and the safe handling of sharps and medical bio-hazardous waste material.

MDR105
Assembly, Wrapping and Packaging of Instruments

Prerequisite(s):

MDR100, MDR102, MDR103 & MDR104

Introduces students to the proper techniques for the assembly, wrapping and/or packaging of surgical instruments, supplies and patient care equipment. Students will need a video camera or cell phone camera with video capability.

Disinfection and Sterilization Concepts

This course introduces students to the key principles and factors affecting sterilization and monitoring sterilization cycles. Common type of sterilization processes will be explored.

MDR107
Sterile Storage and Inventory Control

MDR100, MDR102, MDR103, MDR104, MDR105 & MDR106

This course introduces students to sterile storage, inventory control distribution systems including the case care system, portering, and stock rotation.

Program Outcomes

This program prepares students to work as entry level employees in a medical devices reprocessing department.

Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively in a medical setting with accurate terminology and in a professional manner.
  2. Apply the principles of proper sterilization, infection control and antiseptic techniques to devices reprocessing.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of decontamination and environmental safety control and the proper handling of medical bi-hazard material.
  4. Communicate with understanding of human relations and motivational tactics in professional interactions.
  5. Apply the principles and proper techniques for wrapping and/or packing surgical equipment and supplies
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of inventory distribution systems, stock rotation and sterile storage techniques and apply them appropriately.

Credit for Prior Learning

Prior Learning Assessment

Earn college credits for what you already know!
Prior Learning Assessment is a method of assessing and recognizing learning that is equal to college level learning, but has been gained outside a traditional classroom (through work experience, volunteering, outside study, etc.). If you can prove that the knowledge you have gained meets the outcomes of a Seneca course, then credit will be awarded.

How does the PLA process work?
Prior Learning is demonstrated through a "challenge" process. The process measures learning through a variety of methods which may include tests, portfolio assessment, interviews, demonstrations, essays, and work samples. The method used will be determined in consultation with a Program Coordinator.

The process may take from 6 to 8 weeks.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October) and Spring (June).

CSA-CMDRT Recognition
