Advanced Field Programmable Gate Arrays

Subject Description
This course expands the student?s acknowledge and experience of FPGA design and development. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to design and simulate large complex digital systems in an FPGA using VHDL tools. The students in the class will form several design groups. Each design group is expected to complete a functioning FPGA design as a project. Each member of a design group will be responsible for a particular section of the design. Expert groups will be formed from the members of all design groups assigned the same design section. The members of expert groups will collaborate within the expert groups to design their section. Within each design group, each member may have additional responsibility. This may include schedule tracking, section interface design co-ordination, etc. A technical report forms a major part of the course. Each design section will be evaluated as well as the project.

The rational behind this approach is the small group learning model. It also reflects the engineering design model within industries for large project designs. A design team will draw members multiple disciplines. Typically each discipline will have more than a single member.

The student will be expected to use the World-Wide-Web (WWW) for reference material and documentation relevant to the course and to have email.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
