Behaviour Observation and Measurement

Subject Description
 
This course introduces students to various measures of behaviour and to data collection procedures used in the field of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Observation and assessment of human behaviour are integral to the science and practice of ABA. Students will develop skills associated with selecting, defining, observing and measuring behaviour as well as gathering and compiling background information to support change. 

Credit Status
This is a required course in the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:


  1. Explain how behaviour science fits into the larger domain of science and how behaviour analysis fits into the larger domain of psychology.
  2. Distinguish between mentalism and behavioural explanations of behaviour.
  3. Describe how behaviour analysts determine that target behaviours are socially significant and why this is important.
  4. Explain the role and importance of data and behaviour measurement in the field of applied behaviour analysis. 
  5. Develop operational definitions for behaviours targeted for both increase and decrease.
  6. Define the dimensions of human behaviour to promote the selection of suitable data collection methods and practice collecting data using continuous and discontinuous measurement procedures.
  7. Describe methods used to assess the quality of behaviour measurement.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
