Family Focused Practice: Early Intervention

Subject Description
Students will gain understanding of the nature of funding for universal and targeted programs (at the federal, provincial, and municipal government levels) that address the needs of a wide range of families. Empirical research, government documents, and other publications are examined. Students will examine the evolution of principles and theories of family support connected to service delivery. Contextually relevant programs for families with complex service needs will be explored.

BCD808 is a required subject in the Honours Bachelor of Child Development degree.

  1. Critique current government legislation, funding models, and policies to determine the level of support for family-focused service delivery.
  2. Analyze community and home-based programs to identify the theoretical underpinnings that inform service delivery.
  3. Evaluate the inclusiveness of community and home-based programs currently delivering services to families.
  4. Use strengths-based family systems to recommend contextually relevant interventions for families with complex service needs.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
