Subject Title
CAD Fundamentals

Subject Description
This is an introductory subject in drafting for Civil/Environmental disciplines using the latest release of Autodesk software to produce 2-dimensional drawings in accordance with industry standards. The course will cover principles of creating orthographic views and sections.This course also covers manual sketching, and reading and interpreting drawing sets.

Credit Status
One subject credit in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technician, Environmental Technology and Environmental Technician programs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Apply manual sketching techniques to communicate technical information relevant to civil and environmental industries
  2. Reading and interpreting drawing sets.
  3. Draw orthographic projections of 3-Dimensional objects by manual sketching and using AutoCAD.
  4. Apply line types and line weights according to drafting conventions.
  5. Find and identify various items in the AutoCAD interface, within menus and toolbars.
  6. Apply the Cartesian coordinate system and understand its functionality within the AutoCAD environment.
  7. Input numerical data in Cartesian and surveying formats to produce accurate layout geometry in a timely manner.
  8. Apply various basic Draw commands to create two-dimensional discipline-specific drawings based on Seneca Drafting Standards.
  9. Apply Linear and Aligned Dimensions, Leaders, Line Types, and Line Weights to drawings based on discipline specific drafting conventions and Seneca Drafting Standards.
  10. Use various basic Modify commands to change drawings in a timely manner.
  11. Create and insert basic blocks into AutoCAD drawings.
  12. Inquiry areas, coordinates and distances in the AutoCAD environment.
  13. Set up and Plot scaled drawings optimized for display to the system printer/plotter using proper font sizes and linetype scales.
  14. Identify and promote sustainable practices in site development. 
  15. Identify the understanding of the Indigenous people's impact on the land.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
