Professional Pathways

Subject Description
This foundational first semester course is designed to prepare students to enter and be successful in placement and the workplace. Behavioural Sciences is a branch of psychology with a number of different clinical applications. As such, there are many different employment opportunities that may be open to students when they graduate from this program. The purpose of this course is twofold. Firstly, the course will give students an opportunity to explore the various settings in which they might find employment and the career pathways they might consider upon graduation. Secondly, it will introduce students to the realities of professional practice as behavior specialists. Students will be introduced to the rewards and challenges of work in this field across a variety of employment settings. Students will also acquire an understanding of the basics of professional behavior and expectations of the workplace as part of preparation for future placements in the program and employment beyond Seneca.

Credit Status
This is a required course in the Behavioural Sciences diploma.
                                                                         

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

General Outcomes:  By the end of the semester, students should have an understanding of the different career paths available to them upon graduation. They should have realistic expectations about entering and working in this profession. They will also be equipped with skills to be successful workplace professionals.

Specific Outcomes:

  1. Provide examples of possible career paths in this field and describe what a worker can expect in terms of employment opportunities when entering the profession.
 
  1. Identify employment settings of potential interest.
 
 
  1. Explain some of the challenges, difficulties and rewards of this professional field/
 
  1. Evaluate strategies for stress management and self-care for students and employees.
 
  1. Explain the importance of supervision in this field, and what to expect from a supervisory relationship.
 
  1. Develop a personal code of professionalism to ensure success in the workplace.
 
  1. Prioritize responsibilities and tasks when working in a hierarchical work environment.
 
  1. Generate strategies for successful collaboration with other professionals.
 
  1. Understand the various resources available to support professional success at Seneca.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
