Subject Title
Operating Systems and Project Management

Subject Description
The aim of this course is to provide the students with hands-on analysis experience required in the workforce. The students will begin learning the linux operating system and learn to complete tasks using basic linux commands and utilities. They will gain access to a high-performance compute cluster and learn how to install tools and submit and monitor jobs. Students will be introduced to the basics of project management including writing project proposals. Students will then be introduced to high throughput sequencing data. They will learn how to align this data and run basic quality control metrics. They will use open source tools that are commonly used in the field.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Bioinformatics (BIF) post-diploma program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the linux operating system including the use of environment variables and basic linux commands.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a high-performance computer cluster and the ability to submit and monitor jobs.
  • Describes the basics of project management.
  • Write a project proposal.
  • Describe next-generation sequencing (NGS), the current use of this technology and the impact it has had on the field.
  • Describe what an alignment is and demonstrate the ability to align the raw sequence data to a reference genome using standard tools.
  • Describe the biases that exist in NGS data and how to address them computationally.
  • Describe the standard data formats used in the field (SAM/BAM and VCF formats).

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
