Subject Title
Bioinformatics Programming with Perl

Subject Description

This course will equip students with the knowledge and skills required for Bioinformatics Programming in Python. The course builds on programming fundamentals learned in earlier modules, and allows students to grow their ability to design, build, and test larger programs, at the same time as learning basic syntax and libraries specific to the Python language. By the end of the course, students should be familiar with the typical suite of libraries used for scientific computing and data analysis in Python, and have demonstrated the use these tools to develop a bioinformatics-related project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Ability to use typical syntax and constructs in the Python language, including file reading, string manipulation, list operations, dictionaries, and objects
  2. Knowledge of and experience using the typical suite of libraries for scientific computing in Python
  3. Familiarity with how to read and use the documentation for Python libraries and modules
  4. Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and test programs and algorithms in Python
  5. Experience of developing Python program documentation, including a User Guide, Test Plan, and client presentation.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
