Biology

Subject Description
This is an introductory Biology course which examines various biological concepts and processes related to the human body at the microbiological level. Upon completion, students will have the foundation necessary for future study of human anatomy & physiology.

A broad range of topics will be investigated, including, but not limited to cellular structures and
functions, metabolic processes, genetic inheritance, evolution & population dynamics and
human body organization at the tissue level

Credit Status
BIO105 is not a Seneca College credit course. However, this course is an academic requirement for successful completion of the Pre-Health Sciences Pathways to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:


Upon successful completion of this subject, the student will be able to:
1. Make use of the Scientific Method in order to examine and solve problems through
laboratory activities.
2. Accurately express research results in written form using appropriate APA formatting
rules
3. Describe major cellular structures and how they contribute to metabolic activities in the
human body.
4. Identify tissue types and indicate the specific role(s) they play in organs and organ
systems.
5. Solve genetic outcomes using both Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance patterns
and appropriate analysis tools.
6. Examine the Theory of Evolution using relevant evidence while distinguishing between
macroevolution and microevolution.
7. Apply the concepts and theories of population dynamics in relation to various
microbiological and human populations.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
