Subject Title
Business Math Applications

Subject Description
This is a one-semester mathematics course in the conceptual understanding of numerical and problem solving skills that apply to the business or corporate environment.

Credit Status
This is a required credit for all Office Administration students enrolled in the one-year diploma programs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Perform computations using basic operations of arithmetic on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents.

2. Analyze and solve word problems using percents, ratios, rates, and proportions.

3. Evaluate simple expressions with powers, roots, and exponents.

4. Examine the outcomes of mathematical operations to determine the reasonableness of results.

5. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assignments as scheduled.

6. Demonstrate achievement of the following learning outcomes related to essential employability skills:

  • execute mathematical operations accurately
  • apply a systematic approach to solve problems
  • manage the use of time and other resources to complete projects

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
