Digital Communications: Strategies and Applications

Subject Description
In the second of two courses on social and digital media, students will deepen their understanding of how to develop a strategic approach to integrated communications. They will learn how to develop a content calendar that?s tied to an organization?s key performance indicators (KPIs) and become visual storytellers. They will examine why video is the ultimate sharable social object, learn about the role of a community manager and gain an understanding of how to navigate in the paid, earned, shared and owned media model. They will also study best practices in online crisis and issues management. As in course one, they receive hands-on experience to test and evaluate social platforms and tools.
 
Students will delve further into how to use digital media to plan, execute and measure corporate communications programs and activities.  They will continue to explore the underlying principles and theory behind adapting particular social media/digital communications strategies to build relationships with audiences and achieve corporate goals. This will sharpen students? abilities to make informed strategic and tactical decisions.
 
The course begins with an examination of brand management and reputation, the integrated communications model, measurement and digital trends. It uses cases and examples, discussions, and lectures by guest practitioners as the foundation for understanding and analyzing the intersection between principles, theory and practice in the digital and traditional worlds. It is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of digital and social media by combining both theoretical and practical instruction.

Credit Status

CCM701 is a required subject in the Corporate Communications Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles and theories of social media/digital communications as they relate to public relations-corporate communications.
  2. Understand the relationship between theory and practice in social media/digital communications.
  3. Incorporate social media/digital communications strategies and tactics in public relations-corporate communications plans.
  4. Use social media/digital communications tools to help achieve the objectives of public relations-corporate communications programs.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of public relations-corporate communications programs by using digital evaluation and assessment tools.
  6. Understand the role and importance of an integrated communications plan within an organization
  7. Design social media/digital processes that help public relations-corporate communications professionals to monitor the progress of the programs they are responsible for.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
