Subject Title
Chemistry - Organic

Subject Description
This subject offers both lecture (theory) and laboratory (theory and practical) components. It is the only offering of organic chemistry in the Chemical Laboratory Technician (CLT) program. The lectures focus on the functional group approach (i.e. including their characteristics and reactions) and the laboratory component covers synthesis, separation, purification and identification of organic compounds.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Lecture learning outcomes:

  1. Outline differences in characteristics between inorganic and organic compounds
  2. Use traditional and IUPAC nomenclature to name and interpret structural formulas of compounds possessing functional groups
  3. Understand the concept of isomerism in organic chemistry
  4. Understand the occurrence, physical properties and applications of organic molecules containing a variety of functional groups
  5. Write chemical equations describing the preparation and chemical reactions of molecules containing a variety of functional groups

Laboratory learning outcomes:
  1. Comprehend the safety features required in undertaking organic laboratory operations and the chemical hazards associated with the chemicals used therein
  2. Grasp the processes involved in organic compound synthesis, separation, purification and purity verification
  3. Understand how to correctly and professionally record scientific data and prepare laboratory reports
  4. Work professionally in a laboratory environment, including reliable attendance, arriving on-time, employability skills
