Composition and Research

Subject Description
This subject is designed to develop the skills and qualities needed to communicate effectively and to conduct a successful job search. The student will learn to compose routine business correspondence as well as a personal resume and covering letter. The student will learn how to conduct research on specific corporations, areas of employment and current job market trends. The entire interview process, including preparation, handling of the interview itself and appropriate follow-up steps, will be examined.

Credit Status
CLJ501 is a required credit for Office Administration students enrolled in the accelerated Executive, Legal and Health Services Diploma programs. It is a Vocational General Education subject, and therefore, its successful completion fulfills one of the General Education requirements necessary for graduation from the program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Create a cover letter and resume that link personal, education and work experience to employability skills in relevant industries in order to apply for jobs through traditional job search techniques.

2. Develop a job search strategy that aligns with personal goals and industry requirements in order to lead self-directed career strategies.

3. Apply business communication skills and participate in mock interviews to further enhance student employability.

4. Develop a professional social media strategy in order to build a personal brand presence online.

5. Explain the basic human resources issues related to the interview process.

6. Plan effective career advancement strategies and demonstrate a knowledge of how to apply them.

7. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assignments as scheduled.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
