CLJ501 - Composition and Research

This subject is designed to develop the skills and qualities needed to communicate effectively and to conduct a successful job search. The student will learn to compose routine business correspondence as well as a personal resume and covering letter. The student will learn how to conduct research on specific corporations, areas of employment and current job market trends. The entire interview process, including preparation, handling of the interview itself and appropriate follow-up steps, will be examined.

DMS311 - Data Management Software

In DMS311 students will continue to improve their ability to manipulate software within the Windows environment as they learn the basic features of Microsoft Excel and Access. In Excel, students will learn how to enter, organize, manipulate, calculate, and graph data, as well as formatting techniques for effectively presenting data. Students will use formulas, functions, and explore what-if analysis tools. In Access, students will learn the basic techniques and concepts for planning and designing databases. Students will modify database structures, inputting records, and create reports and forms.

MHB511 - Medical Health Billing

This subject introduces students to the basic principles of Health Claim billing in all its aspects as outlined by the Ministry of Health. The Schedule of Benefits will be utilized on an on-going basis to prepare pre-coded Health claims both manually and electronically. Students will process billing information using a comprehensive practice management medical billing software package that simulates authentic billing procedures.

MOP511 - Medical Office Procedures

This subject is designed to provide the Medical Office Administration student with an understanding of the professional responsibilities and administrative duties required in a health care office. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in a variety of medical office areas including reception duties, methods of appointment scheduling, preparation of patient charts, effective use of the principles of triage, ordering supplies, coordinating meetings and conferences, maintaining accounting records, diagnostic testing, clinical secretarial tasks, and processing doctors' orders.

Emphasis will be placed on the development of the student's ability to exercise initiative and judgment and to make decisions within the scope of his/her authority, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of the client.

Communications, organization, and human relations skills will be emphasized on an on-going basis throughout this course.

MOS511 - Medical Document Production & Office Simulation

The objective of this subject is to provide training and experience for a student who is preparing for a position as a medical administrative assistant..

In Word student will consolidate and integrate their previously acquired communication, word processing, document preparation, keyboarding, and proofreading skills while expanding their competency in using Advanced Microsoft Word.

The latter portion of MOS511 simulates employing the student in a medical office. The realistic setting thus created provides students with medical office experiences and acquaints them with procedures, forms, and medical transcription, and develops the worker's self-reliance and decision-making skills through exposure to more and more complex administrative duties.

TRM511 - Medical Transcription

In this course, students will acquire a working knowledge of the specialized rules to be used in medical transcription and will become familiar with major reference sources that will facilitate accurate transcription. They will use Microsoft Word software to accurately transcribe chart notes, a variety of hospital reports, and general correspondence taken from actual patient medical records. Students will learn appropriate medical style and formatting guidelines in order to create documents to acceptable medical office standards.
Emphasis will be placed on the development of medical vocabulary related to specific body systems; in addition, English language skills (grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading) and listening and decision-making skills will be reinforced on an on-going basis.
