Subject Title
Process Control and Industrial Safety

Subject Description
This subject introduces the students to the applied chemical engineering fundamentals of process control, quality assurance/quality control systems and industrial process safety. Process control topics covered include feed-forward and feed-back process control systems, proportional, integral and differential control concepts, typical process control sensors and applications. The student will become familiar with other process concepts such control charts, TQM, ISO and 6-sigma quality assurance systems. In the latter portion of the course, the course will emphasize industrial safety topics such as hazardous materials, BLEVE's, and process safety analysis (HAZOP).

Occupational Health and Safety 433, Chemistry 273, Chemical Instrumentation CMI333, Statistics 433

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Understand the concepts of feed-forward and feed-back control systems, and process time-lag.

2. Understand the terms on-off control, proportional control, integral control and derivative control. The student should be able to describe how a process variable will change depending upon the method(s) of control. The student will be introduced to piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID's)

3. Understand the different types of typical industrial control sensors such as pH, conductivity, pressure, level, temperature and flow. Typical installation and maintenance issues with respect to each sensor type will be addressed.

4. The student should be able to develop and use process control charts to maintain control of one or more process variables.

5. Be familiar with quality assurance programs such as Total Quality Management, ISO 9000/14000 programs, and 6-sigma.

6. Understand the fundamentals of industrial process safety concepts of hazardous materials including flammability (fire triangle, fire-fighting, BLEVE's), reactivity and toxicity. An understanding of process safety analyses (HAZOP) will be addressed.
