Subject Title
Skin Care I

Subject Description
This subject provides an overview of the histology of the skin including the structure, function and disorders of the skin. Emphasis will be placed on factors that affect the condition of the skin such as diet, medication, sun exposure, allergies as well as the analysis and treatment of various skin types and conditions. Students will also be introduced to various retail skin care products that are currently available, learning the correct procedures for skin treatment and basic facials.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the skin;
  2. Identify and explain the structure and functions of the skin;
  3. Identify, explain and differentiate among the various factors affecting the skin such as heredity, hormones, health, climatic conditions, air pollution, emotions, excessive massage and sun;
  4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of facial bones;
  5. Differentiate and identify various skin types and primary versus secondary lesions of the skin;
  6. Define and explain the differences among cosmetic retail products used for skin care;
  7. Demonstrate the ability to perform a professional facial cleansing procedure including a skin analysis in a retail environment;
  8. Prepare a presentation and professional written report based on a comparative analysis of retail skin care product lines;
  9. Create a skin care analysis and home care chart for a retail customer;
  10. Demonstrate professionalism in image, station set-up and conduct;
  11. Demonstrate the ability to accurately follow directions, both verbal and written;
  12. Demonstrate the ability to work within assigned time frames to meet deadlines.

* In this subject, students will demonstrate some of these learning outcomes during practical class time. Students will receive feedback during these classes and testing of learning outcomes will be random. In other words, students will have to be prepared to demonstrate any or all of the learning outcomes during practical testing.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
