Subject Title
Control Systems Fundamentals

Subject Description

This course covers the fundamentals of control systems. It covers the basic principles for designing and controlling simple mechanical, electrical and fluid systems. The fundamental concept of control system theory is covered.

The course introduces various control systems including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in a complex mechatronic system.  Examples are given using the automation system SIMATIC S7 and the related programming software TIA portal/STEP7.

Using computer simulation, students will learn the role the control system (PLC) plays within a mechatronic system or subsystem. They will also learn basic elements of PLC functions by writing small programs and testing these programs on an actual system (2 axis gripper pick and place unit). Students will learn to identify malfunctioning PLCs hardware, as well as to apply troubleshooting strategies to identify and localize problems caused by PLC software.

Credit Status
One subject credit in the Electronics Engineering Technology Program - Communications and Control Systems options.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain the role of a control system.

2. Understand the importance of automation and feedback in control systems.

3. Identify all subsystems in a closed loop system block diagram, and discuss their roles.

4. Explain the role of various control systems in various industrial applications.

5. Explain the role of programmable logic controllers, PLCs within a given system or module.

6. Trace and describe the flow of information in a given mechatronic system or subsystem with a focus on the control function of PLCs in the system.

7. Describe the basic functions and design of PLCs.

8. Read, analyze and utilize the technical documents such as data sheets, timing diagrams, operation manuals, schematics, and ladder diagrams.

9. Correctly localize, identify and document system malfunctions in or caused by PLC hardware, based upon the technical documentation.

10. Apply safety rules while working on the system.

11. Transfer the knowledge learned from one system to another system.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.

By attending live classes, students are consenting to the collection and use of their personal information for the purposes of administering the class and associated coursework. To learn more about Seneca's privacy practices, visit Privacy Notice.
