Subject Title
Child and Adolescent Development

Subject Description
The course introduces the student to the theoretical frameworks of child and adolescent development that will be instrumental in informing the knowledge base of his\her practice. The student will become conscious of the myriad of factors (physiological, cognitive, emotional, social, cultural and subjective) that affect child and adolescent development throughout the lifespan. Students will be using case studies and personal journals to explore these issues from a relational and resilience based focus.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe several contemporary theoretical frameworks in child and adolescent development from a life span perspective relevant to the profession.
  2. Describe physical, cognitive and social/emotional developmental milestones associated with child development from conception to adolescence.
  3. Recognize, at an introductory level, factors/disorders/underlying structures that might negatively impact child and adolescent development across the lifespan, including: (a) Social Determinants of Health, (b) Toxic Stress in caregivers and children/youth, (c) Adverse Childhood Experiences
  4. Identify, at an introductory level, Child and Youth Care related interventions, with a focus on relational practice and increasing resilience
  5. Analyze the students' own life stages and experiences and articulate how this might impact their work as a CYC practitioner.
In addition to the above learning outcomes, students are expected to attend all classes and participate fully. Confidentiality, courtesy and respect for peers and faculty are expected at all times.  All of the above knowledge and skills will be teacher and self-evaluated on an ongoing basis through assignments and classroom activities.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
