Subject Title
Computer Architecture and Networking

Subject Description
This course presents the fundamental concepts of today's computer system architecture. Students will discuss hardware terminology and contrast core hardware design concepts. Hands-on labs will be used to troubleshoot and implement design plans, hardware upgrades, security devices, and maintenance procedures. System components, from the instruction set architecture level through benchmarking will be evaluated for performance and cost comparisons.

Credit Status
1 credit in the IFS program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Identify, analyze, reconstruct and explain the function of the major hardware components of a modern PC
  • Describe in appropriate language, the execution of commands from the level of digital logic through the various computer subsystem to its intended output device
  • Classify modern memory types in terms of architecture, speed, cost and compatibility with legacy systems to determine best requisite type
  • Assess the probable cause of various malfunctions based on accumulated knowledge of component operation
  • Plan, organize, justify and prepare upgrades including plans to manipulate configuration settings to accommodate them
  • Understand and manipulate the formulas and units related to performance measurement

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
