DCN286 - Introduction to Data Communication Technology

This course is an introduction to the field of Telecommunications and Data Communications. The course focuses on the practical aspects of implementation, installation and maintenance of Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks. Ethernet and a practical understanding of components, hardware requirements, cabling, software and security/management features needed to build and operate a LAN will be learned. Wide Area technologies will also be discussed, directed towards the development of a practical understanding of the functions and abilities of connectivity devices such as switches, bridges and routers.

WIN213 - Introduction to Scripting and PowerShell

PowerShell is Microsoft's task automation framework, for the administration of Windows servers, clients, and networks. PowerShell enables a wide range of tasks, including software and hardware installation and configuration, and user account creation and management. Upon successful completion of this subject, students will be proficient with the PowerShell command environment, and will be able to write and maintain scripts that combine sequential, iterative, conditional, and repetitive statements, to support the automation of basic system and user administration.

OPS235 - Introduction to Open System Servers

This project-based subject will teach students how to install and configure a Linux server. Further, students will learn how to connect to and communicate over a network in a controlled environment. They will learn how to manage their files on their system and how to set-up file and directory permissions. Students will manage basic system security and firewall settings. In order to configure their system, students will gain knowledge of a few basic Unix/Linux commands and be exposed to 'Shell' basics. Finally students will work with both text and graphical user interfaces.

WIN210 - Basic Administration of Microsoft Windows

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform administration tasks on a Microsoft Windows Server operating system. Topics such as installation, user account creation and maintenance, permissions, printing, hardware and disk storage will be covered through lecture and hands-on exercises.
