Advanced Flash

Subject Description
The second of three Flash courses in the DMA program, Advanced Flash uses the concepts introduced in DMA 205 (Introduction to Flash) to further develop students' skills in the use of Flash, with an emphasis on high-quality production values and intermediate interactivity programming using advanced action scripting techniques. Students will engage in a major assignment which requires them to use their skills in storytelling and design know-how to create a written proposal and production of a strong portfolio piece integrating narrative and interactivity.Pre-requisite: DMA 205

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Identify professional qualities that make a successful, creative, original interactive product
2. Develop time-management skills and budgeting techniques
3. Understand the shift from Flash web design into User application building
4. Structure and organize content for a professional studio environment
5. Utilize user input to drive information and apply this to a modular creation
6. Work with Flash object classes that rewards users and gather marketable information
7. Understand the method and reason of using Arrays for game design and information
8. Work with action script and simulate motion and physical effects of friction and gravity
9. Understand the concept of navigation alternatives and the theory of UI
10. Utilize Data-base architecture for TXT content and XML hierarchy integration into Flash
11. Develop re-usable code that drives computer generate random abstract composition
12. Apply alternative uses of Flash for CD-ROM / Broadcast Video and Print
13. Develop several finished portfolio pieces hi-lighting user interactive applications
14. Develop a scalable portfolio platform that can be used to showcase and market oneself.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
