Subject Description
Web Design 2 - Design & Development
 
This subject focusses on Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress and phpBB3 as they relate to use as ?dynamic' websites, portfolio & photo showcases & galleries, ecommerce sites and blogs. Their use as support and ?community' bulletin boards/forums is also examined.
The subject teaches the basic knowledge and ability to install self-hosted CMS sites and modify and change the layouts, and themes/styles of WordPress and phpBB3 based sites. Additionally, they will learn the use of specific powerful plugins and scripts that change and add to the design, layout and functionality of the sites and add social media links and content, contact forms, and event calendars.
An understanding of the role and use of a MySQL database and PHP in Content Management Systems is also included in the curriculum.
The final project is converting an HTML/CSS website into a WordPress theme; it is then installed and tested to examine the differences between a dynamic CMS web site and a static HTML/CSS web site.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Understand basic PHP syntax, including creating variables and mixing PHP and HTML.
  2. Understand how to setup WordPress as a dynamic website, portfolio or photo showcase / gallery or blog.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to Install a self-hosted WordPress and phpBB3 CMS including the following:
    • Upload files to the correct web server folder
    • Install the CMS and connect it to a database via the install procedure
    • Access & utilize basic functions of an administration control panel/dashboard
    • Install & configure style / theme files to change the CMS site design & layout
    • Use menus and widgets to additionally modify the CMS layout and style.
  4. Utilize an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to install self-hosted WordPress and phpBB3 sites on a server.
  5. Utilize an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to install plugins and theme / style files on a self-hosted WordPress and phpBB3 site on a server.
  6. Modify a WordPress layout using the menu and widget functions.
  7. Convert an HTML/CSS based website into a WordPress theme

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
