EAC150 - College English

College English is an introductory college writing and reading course fundamental to successful college studies. Through a variety of assignments and classroom activities, students will strive to develop the rhetorical and analytical skills essential to their success as communicators in college and upon graduation. Fiction and non-fiction will be a central vehicle for teaching writing.

PRE-REQUISITES: EAC149, EAP500, ESL934, ELI Level 8 or placement based on a Seneca College English Skills Assessment

JRN100 - Multi-Platform Visuals

This course introduces students to image capturing and editing. They explore how to use professional news cameras as well as how to maximize mobile camera use for electronic news gathering (ENGs) that can be repurposed across platforms. Students study basic lighting, audio and shooting techniques including proper exposure, focus, white balance, focal length and depth of field. They practice how to import, export and catalogue audio and video files for use in editing with industry software.

JRN141 - The Writing Workshop - Mechanics

Students immerse themselves in a writing and content production lab where they connect the principles of story, structure and news value with writing on deadline.  Students develop strategies to enhance English language and writing skills.  They learn the mechanics of writing news, sports, entertainment and weather copy and how to cover a news conference using Canadian Press style.  Students learn the roles and responsibilities of news production personnel including technical and editorial newscast positions.

JRN170 - Research Methods

This multimedia digital journalism course establishes the context for future accurate and well researched digital storytelling. Students will be introduced to online writing and reporting, video creation and reporting on multiple platforms. Students learn how to gather information from reliable sources essential to researching, writing, shooting and editing a news story. Students filter and verify sources, use the internet, library/subject data bases and social media, while developing their own reliable contacts and digital research packs. Students explore a variety of pre-interview techniques.

RTV113 - Television News I

RTV113 is an introduction to television news and newscasts. Students will learn how a television newsroom operates on a daily basis both editorially and technically and will work in real time to produce a daily newscast. The newsroom (classroom) will be treated as an actual working newsroom with students participating both on-camera and behind the scenes.

RTV114 - Radio News I

This subject is an introduction to the radio news component of the Broadcast Journalism (JBC) program. It will concentrate on the development of the basic skills needed to prepare and present radio news reports and newscasts. The principles of journalism will be put into practice in a radio environment.

RTV336 - News Reporting I

This subject develops advanced presentation skills for radio and television newscast and current affairs programming. The emphasis is on radio news presentation.
