Subject Title
Effective Business Writing

Subject Description
This course introduces students to the basic formats and principles of business communications. It emphasizes the analysis of audience, purpose, and message. It gives students the opportunity to practice these formats and principles in a variety of situations commonly encountered at work.

Credit Status
A credit course in all two- and three-year business programs. (Prerequisite for EAC694).

PREREQUISITES: EAC150 or its equivalent.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Adopt a positive professional attitude as demonstrated by positive involvement (courtesy, attentiveness, and substantial participation in group activities) and effective time management (punctual attendance and completion of assigned tasks)

2. Identify the audience and purpose in common business communication situations and create effective responses

3. Choose the appropriate format for any situation and communicate effectively in that format. (Situations may require spoken or written responses and the use of electronic communications tools.)

4. Compose and edit documents that are readable, grammatically and mechanically sound, and appropriate in tone

5. Respond appropriately to written or spoken instructions, requests, and questions

6. Write and present persuasively in order to market or sell ideas, products, or services; and conduct research and incorporate source material into written assignments

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
