EVL355 - Introduction to Computer-Aided Design

Computers have moved into all aspects of the workplace.  The Landscape/Horticulture Industry is adopting computer aided drafting (C.A.D.) software to improve efficiency and create designs. Students with capabilities in this area should have an increased advantage when seeking careers in the industry or may wish to apply it to their own personal/business application.  This course will prepare students with key skills and knowledge in using a C.A.D system to develop a landscape design over a semester.  This third semester course prepares students for several advanced courses in semester 4.

EVL375 - Business and Project Management for Environmental Professionals

The role of small and medium sized enterprises in our economy has increased significantly.  Privately owned and owner-operator landscape firms constitute an important and growing part of the economy. This subject will provide students with an understanding of important business operations including the collection, the disbursement, cash flow management and the interpretation of financial statements. The course examines the process of planning for a landscape business. Administrative and financial controls relating to small business will also be evaluated. Business simulations and case studies will be introduced to challenge the student to analyze business problems that may be encountered in small landscape business enterprises.

EVL384 - Landscape Construction

Landscapes are a major component of our outside environment, whether it be a boardwalk or a water feature in a residential garden. With hard landscape materials being a critical part of landscape management, the careful selection and proper installation of these materials is a priority. This course will cover landscape materials and installation methods commonly used in landscape construction. The use of the laser level will also be covered.   The course also offers practical sessions and hands-on labs in the application of the skills and knowledge associated with effective landscape construction.

EVL385 - Aquatic Ecosystems

Leonardo da Vinci described water as the driving force of all Nature.  The degradation of streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands not only results in a lowering of water quality, but impacts other ecosystems and even the human economy as well. This subject explores the definition, structure, and biology of different types of freshwater ecosystems in Ontario. Consideration is given to the stewardship of healthy ecosystems and the restoration of degraded ones.

CPP200 - Work Integrated Learning Professional Practice

The integration of classroom activities with work term experiences is vital for the complete and successful learning and understanding of co-of work term experiences. Structured integration and reflective learning with peers provide the opportunity to make sense out of work experiences, to put these experiences into broader perspectives, and to internalize learning.
