EVL453 - Landscape Design

A Landscape Designer should have the ability to apply the principles of sound Landscape Design to the use of open spaces. In addition to basic design ability, they must also understand the interaction between the Landscape Materials; water, fire, wood, stone, climate, and plant material/vegetation. The designer must also understand the interaction between these materials, the climate in which they function and the human use to which they are being adapted. The practice of Landscape Design comprises those activities relating chiefly to the creating of a well balanced and aesthetically pleasing landscape that is in harmony with its surroundings.

EVL473 - Integrated Pest Management

This subject is designed to cover areas of Pest Management and control in landscape industry and municipal areas Particular emphasis is placed on Ontario Ministry of Environment integrated pest management (IPM) and plant health care guidelines (PHC). A significant part of the course is devoted to pathogens, pests and environmental stresses including their diagnosis, identification and cultural control. Adequate knowledge of physiological disorders, biotic agents, biological control agents and resistant cultivars are fundamental to the development of an effective and environmentally sound plant health care program. The development and the implementation of IPM and PHC in municipal and landscape environment will be discussed. This course will cover material included in the Ministry of Environment's IPM accreditation program.

EVL475 - Business Management for Environmental Professionals II

Building on the subject material from EVL 375, students will learn about the process of operating a small business and the ongoing management requirements. This subject is designed to encourage students to take advantage of expanding management opportunities in the landscape, horticulture industry. Students considering starting their own small business will benefit from this course as well.

EVL486 - Urban Ecology

Urban environments present unique challenges to environmental landscape management.  The course will explore landscape management options related to urban biodiversity conservation, the urban heat island effect and climate change, storm water management, invasive species, permaculture, smart growth/new urbanism, road ecology and human/nature interactions.  Social, political, and economic influences on urban ecosystems will also be examined, with discussions focused on the planning and development of sustainable urban environments.

EVL496 - Natural Heritage Monitoring and Assessment

Building on the previous three semesters of study on ecological communities, this course will introduce students to the variety of field and lab techniques and protocols developed to monitor and assess the health and well-being of natural habitats. Successful completion of this course will also provide students with skills relating to data interpretation and analysis, report writing, and concepts in planning and development in natural environments. The course will be taught through a combination of in-class lectures and on-campus field work and field trips.
