Design Applications for Product Development

Subject Description
The subject builds on theory taught in FCA 454 Design Applications - Introduction. Students will develop advanced CAD skills and techniques using the Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop) to develop and design complex apparel items such as knitwear, blazers, pants and outerwear.
Students will develop textile prints and graphics for woven and knit fabrics using various Illustrator and Photoshop techniques. They will correct textile and graphic placement for technical flats using the Illustrator platform. Students will use graphic principles and the Creative Suite to develop logos, hang tags and garment labels.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Develop detailed garment technical drawing using the Creative Suite platform with correct proportions, construction, detail and esthetic presentation;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of knit design application for apparel using appropriate terminology;
  3. Design textile prints in repeat and placement graphics to be presented and placed inside garment technical drawings ('technicals') and for presentation;
  4. Design a logo hang tag and garment label using Illustrator software;
  5. Apply CAD to design merchandise placement and wall elevations.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
