Placement Preparation

Subject Description
This course will be an introduction to human disease with relevance to fitness professionals, and will focus on the fundamental principles of homeostatic mechanisms. The student will explore how alterations in homeostatic mechanisms will disrupt the integrity of human function. An introduction to common medications used in the treatment of these diseases will be presented, as well as the effect of these medications on the response to exercise.  Overall, the mechanisms of disease will be studied in a systems format and will be considered for the effect that they produce on the structure and function of the body.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic concepts of pathophysiology and the general principles of disease.
  2. Discuss how the human body responds to the dynamics of a disease process and the influence of exercise on this.
  3. Recognize common dysfunctions of selected organs or organ systems.
  4. Examine how the various dysfunctions of an organ or organ system affect the human body as a whole.
  5. Consider the effects of disease on the structure and functioning of the body.
  6. Discuss common medications, and describe any effects of these medications on the response to exercise.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
