Subject Title
Fire Suppression I

Subject Description
This subject covers the access to and application of water from various sources to achieve the desired fire stream, as well as maintenance of hoses, nozzles and appliances. Also covers foam and portable fire extinguishing devices.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Ontario College Certificate

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

A. Water Supply

- describe the procedure for opening and closing hydrants
- describe the procedure for determining water flow from a hydrant
- describe the causes of resistance or friction loss in municipal water supply systems
- describe the procedures and equipment necessary for drafting and delivering water
to a fire scene from a static supply
- identify private fire protection water supply systems
- describe the procedure for securing water supply from pressurized and
non-pressurized sources

B. Hose and Appliances

- identify the types, construction, purpose and sizes of fire hoses
- describe the procedures to protect hoses on the fire ground
- identify types of fire hose couplings and standardized threads
- describe the purpose and operation of nozzles, adaptors, valves, and other hose
appliances
- describe the mechanical principles relating to the operation of solid stream, fog and
combination nozzles
- describe how to inspect and clean hoses and appliances
- describe the procedures for testing hoses
- describe the procedure for maintaining an inventory of departmental hoses, nozzles
and appliances
- describe the procedures to advance dry and charged hose lines from the pumper
safely and effectively
- describe the requirements and procedures to extend or shorten hose lines on the fire
ground
- describe the purpose of fire attack lines and exposure protection lines
- describe the procedure for replacing a burst section of hose line on the fire ground
- describe the procedures to retrieve out of control charged lines
- describe the operating principles and characteristics of standpipes
- describe the operating principles and characteristics of sprinklers

C. Fire Streams

- describe why water is used to extinguish fire and explain the water extinguishment
theory
- define the term "fire stream" and identify the purposes of fire streams
- identify types of fire streams and characteristics of each type and the types of
nozzles used to produce each type of fire stream
- identify methods of producing fog streams, types of shut-off valves, and causes of
water hammer
- describe the safe and effective operation of a solid stream
- describe the safe and effective operation of a fog stream
- describe the safe and effective operation of master streams
- describe the safe and effective operation of hose lines supplying fire line nozzles
- describe the safe and effective operation of a foam stream
- describe the safe and effective operation of a "wet water" stream
- describe the procedures to select the correct fire stream for specific fire suppression
situations by taking into consideration situational factors
- list and describe conditions that result in defective fire streams
- describe safety precautions required and effective operations of the different types of
fire streams

D. Foams

- identify types and applications of foam concentrates for fire extinguishment
- describe the equipment required to use foam concentrates
- describe the precautions, hazards and limitations when applying foam to fires at the
emergency scene
- describe the operating principles of foam eductors and aspirating nozzles
- describe the methods and procedures to apply foam appropriately to a fire

E. Portable Extinguishers

- describe the types of extinguishing agents
- describe the classification system for portable extinguishers
- describe the methods of propulsion
- identify types of portable extinguishers used by the fire service and state the classes
of fire that each extinguisher is designed for
- describe the characteristics of each type of portable extinguisher employed by the
fire service
- identify the hazards of using portable extinguishers
- describe the limitations associated with portable extinguishers
- describe procedures for inspecting portable extinguishers
- describe procedures for selecting and using the appropriate extinguisher for a specific type of fire
- describe the types of extinguishing agents
- describe the classification system for portable extinguishers
- describe the methods of propulsion
- identify types of portable extinguishers used by the fire service and state the classes of fire that each extinguisher is designed for
- describe the characteristics of each type of portable extinguisher employed by the fire service
- identify the hazards of using portable extinguishers
- describe the limitations associated with portable extinguishers
- describe procedures for inspecting portable extinguishers
- describe procedures for selecting and using the appropriate extinguisher for a specific type of fire

Specific Skill Learning Outcomes

A. Water Supply

- secure water supply for the fire ground apparatus from a pressurized and non-pressurized source using hydrants, tankers or a static supply so that fire ground pump operations can be carried out safely and effectively
- operate a portable pump to supply hand lines, pumpers and tankers using appliances, hose lines and water sources so that water is supplied as required at correct and safe pressures
- perform the procedures for inspecting portable pumps

B. Hose and Appliances

- advance attack and exposure protection lines such as 38 mm, or 45 mm and 65 mm hoses, using prescribed departmental hose carries so that an efficient advancement and effective placement of hose lines is achieved
- extend existing hose lines including exposure, attack or supply lines using proper shutdown methods and attachment procedures so that adequate hose length is achieved to extinguish the fire, water pressure is maintained and connections have minimal leakage

C. Fire Streams

- select nozzle pattern and flow settings such as fog, straight stream, and litres per minute so that the desired fire stream is attained

D. Foams

E. Portable Extinguishers

- demonstrate the proper selection, method and use of portable extinguishers according to the type of fire
- demonstrate the safety precautions to be employed when using various types of portable extinguishers
