Style and Trends

Subject Description
This subject addresses the evolving continuity of styles in fashion, architecture, art, and furniture design in the western world from their historical perspectives. Individuals within the fashion, floral and retail industry must understand and recognize the cyclical nature of changes in fashion and design. These various historical periods may be recognized through fashion styles, art, architecture, furniture, graphics, and font styles. This subject will provide an overview of several major design periods over the last three centuries and their influence on contemporary fashion and design. This subject will also explore the economic, political, social and technological conditions that influence fashion and style changes.

Please Note:
This subject counts as a Culture and Communication credit under Seneca's General Education requirements. Students must also acquire a general education credit for each of the following categories: Canadian Studies, Social Sciences, and Natural Science/Environmental Studies. Students must also successfully complete COM 101 in order to graduate.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Use industry design terminology for accurate communication;  
  2. Identify fashion styles to establish an understanding of historical design periods; 
  3. Explain the sociopolitical economy effects as it pertains to the cyclical trends of design;    
  4. Identify historical influences in current design applications to show cyclical trends;  
  5. Identify current social trends that influence design; 
  6. Generate a fashion trend report to identify upcoming trends;  
  7. Recognize equity, diversity and inclusion practices in design

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
