FTR507 - Therapeutic Recreation, Field Placement

This course provides students with their first fieldwork experience. It is composed of both classroom work and field experience that enables the student to integrate the academic content from the program with TR work in a health care or social service agency. Information about the practicum experiences are shared, discussed, and analyzed in the classroom to integrate academic learning with the realities of the TR work place.

SCO501 - Cognitive and Developmental Disorders

This course will focus on the developmental and cognitive disorders that occur across the human life span and their implications in the quality of life of patients that require specific therapeutic recreation interventions. The following areas are explored: the physical effects of teratogens on the developing foetus; PDD; ADD/ADHD; communication disorders; learning disorders; conditions of disruptive behaviour. In the older client, the various classifications of dementia as well as neuro-degenerative diseases of the brain will be examined.

TRC502 - Assessment and Therapeutic Recreation Interventions II

The goal of this specialized course is to prepare students with the required knowledge base and skill sets to work with different populations in the field of Therapeutic Recreation in the area of assessments and therapeutic interventions. This course will focus on improving the student's understanding of standardized assessments and the utilization of these assessments in practice including conducting, interpreting and analyzing results. Utilizing the results from the assessment process, students will then learn how to apply this information to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate therapeutic interventions and outcomes in the area of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social programs.

LSO120 - Introduction to Sociology

Sociology is the scientific study of society. This course is a general introduction to the concepts, theories, and major perspectives of sociology. An examination of research studies drawn from Canada and beyond our borders will highlight the significance of using a sociological imagination. Students in this subject will also be involved in the science of sociology by developing their own sociological research proposal.

CPP600 - Co-op Professional Practice

Co-operative (co-op) education is meant to provide learners with the opportunity to integrate academic learning with relevant work experience. It also provides the opportunity to learn more about themselves and their chosen field of study. The purpose of this work term is to enable the learner to make a smooth transition from the academic setting to a work environment.
