Subject Title
Global Cruise Business

Subject Description

This course is offered online to provide students with a foundational level of training in the world of cruising.

The course curriculum will give students an overview of the Global Cruise Business, including the role of the cruise lines in the travel and tourism industry, develop a detailed foundation and knowledge of the various cruise line products, and destinations, career opportunities available, as well as how to sell a cruise.  Current trends and issues in the Global Cruise Industry will be reviewed. Students will complete the CLIA - CCC (Certified Cruise Counsellor Modules) Certification which requires successful completion of eight online modules.

Students must purchase the access code from CLIA, Cruise Line International Association which will provide access to the CCC, Certified Cruise Counsellor online learning modules, quizzes, and tests. The lab fee is $50.00 USD and must be paid to CLIA directly at time of enrollment and registration by credit card. Further details are available on LEARN@Seneca.

Credit Status

One credit, professional option credit towards the Tourism - Services Management Global Tourism Business and Travel Services Specialization Diplomas, Tourism – Travel Operations Certificate.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.    Discuss the basics of the Global Cruise Industry, cruise products, cruise classifications, passenger needs and preferences, types of cruises, explain online available resources, and reservation procedures.

2.    Explain cruising geography destinations available, and their significance to the Global local economy.

3.    Discuss and identify trends and emerging issues that are of economic significance and influence to the Global Cruise Business.

4.    Explain cruise sales, the marketing/promotions, processes and compare the various distribution channels used.

5.    Define the different roles of employees and career opportunities onboard a cruise ship and landside.

6.    Explain knowledge about service quality, guest evaluations, and guest loyalty.

7.    Use Cruise Industry terminology to communicate professionally.

8.    Identify and develop opinions about current and emerging issues the Global Cruise Ship Industry.

9.    Recognize the financial contributions of the Cruise Ship departments overall profitability.

10.  Demonstrate foundational level training and education in selling cruise travel globally.

11.  Demonstrate how to make a cruise reservation using One Source online cruise reservation with Princess Cruises.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
