Subject Title
Occupational Health and Safety

Subject Description
The student will explore the nature and dimensions of workplace health and safety regulation in the workplace by government legislation as well as the role of agencies such as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). In addition, various positive health and safety initiatives made by proactive employers will be examined.

Credit Status
One credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss key legal, technical, political, management and employee issues relating to health and safety in the workplace.
  2. Discuss the role and importance of effective health and safety management to business, government, organized labour, individual employees and society (in general terms).
  3. Outline key legal rights and responsibilities of employees and employers with respect to health and safety issues in the workplace.
  4. Design a basic policy and strategy for promoting safe practices in the work environment and healthy lifestyles.
  5. Explain several techniques for managing and promoting health and safety in the workplace.
  6. Investigate workplace accidents, identify source causes and document recommendations for preventing recurrence.
  7. Conduct a workplace safety inspection, identify and document hazards and recommend corrective actions for management approval.
  8. Manage and document a WSIB case from the time of the initial accident and submission of the Form 7 to the injured worker's return to work.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
