Subject Description
Anatomy and Physiology IIThis course is a continuation of Anatomy and Physiology I. Topics include: the gastrointestinal system, the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the urinary system, and the reproductive system.
Pre-requisite: HSC102

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe the anatomy and function of the lymphatic system.
2. Explain the inflammatory response.
3. Discuss the humoral and cellular immune responses.
4. Identify the structures of the respiratory system and describe their function.
5. Explain the process of ventilation and respiration.
6. Identify and describe the various lung volumes.
7. Describe how neural control and metabolic rate affect respiration.
8. Explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide and transported in the blood.
9. Discuss the changes in the respiratory system with aging.
10. Identify and explain the function of the structures of the digestive system.
11. Explain how various nutrients are digested and absorbed in the digestive system.
12. Discuss the changes in the digestive system with aging.
13. Identify the structures involved in the endocrine system and their functions.
14. Identify and explain the endocrine function of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, and pancreas.
15. Describe the stress response.
16. Describe the anatomy and function of the structures of the urinary system.
17. Illustrate the process of glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption and secretion.
18. Discuss renal control of pH.
19. Describe the process of micturition.
20. Explain how the renal system changes during aging.
21. Illustrate the possible causes and effects of dehydration and how the body compensates.
22. Describe the causes of electrolyte imbalances and how it affects bodily functions.
23. Discuss how the respiratory and renal systems compensate for changes in blood pH.
24. Explain the various responses to changes in body temperature.
25. Identify the structures of the male and female reproductive system.
26. Describe the sexual response in males and females.
27. Discuss the roles of the various male and female sex hormones.
28. Describe the menstrual cycle.
29. Illustrate the process of meiosis, spermatogenesis, and oogenesis.
30. Explain the process of fertilization and development.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
