LIT250 - Placement and Work Skills

This subject prepares students for their field placements and introduces the library workplace. Behaviours and attitudes are stressed. Activities for finding and applying for employment in libraries are begun. Resumes, interviews and cover letters are reviewed with a resume for the first field placement being prepared. Also included in this subject are customer service and special audiences in libraries.

LIT303 - Cataloguing III

Students begin subject cataloguing with the focus on developing skills using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).  In addition, students are introduced to metadata for digital collections; the focus is on application of the Dublin Core metadata scheme.

LIT304 - Acquiring Library Materials II

This subject continues the practices used by libraries when acquiring materials for their patrons. The focus is on acquiring electronic resources and performing interlibrary loans.

LIT306 - Reference Resources II

Students continue to select and use resources for responding to reference requests. Their learning is focused on legal and health resources, as well as other subject areas.

LIT314 - Library Software

This subject concentrates on the vendors, systems and products used by libraries and the selection of them. Students also learn more about the design of databases.

LIT316 - Reference Processes

Students learn to perform reference. Some of the numerous activities performed by the students include conducting reference interviews, and producing subject guides and other tools to assist library users.

FPL385 - Field Placement I for Library Technicians

The field placement alternative course provides students with background on all library types (i.e., academic, school, public and special) through lectures delivered by librarians and library technicians working in the field. Students will also apply theory and practice of library concepts from first and second terms courses to workplace assignments.
