LIT400 - Professional Issues in Libraries

This subject completes the Library and Information Technician Program by concentrating on the library profession that prospective technicians are about to enter. Library associations, professional development and library issues are examined in detail. The education and employment of library technicians is reviewed and issues concerning library technicians are discussed. Preparation for job hunting upon graduation is completed.

Cataloguing IV

This subject covers ISBD, AACR2 and MARC 21 conventions for audio-visual and electronic resources. In addition, students are introduced to metadata for digital collections; the focus is on application of the Dublin Core metadata scheme.

LIT408 - Searching III

This subject continues the searching of periodical databases with the focus on additional systems and subject specific databases. Students learn to select appropriate databases and to create search strategies for topics and audiences.

LIT416 - Library Programs

The skills to plan, conduct and evaluate library programs are developed in this subject. The students learn to prepare various types of programs and gain knowledge about various audiences and activities.

LIT420 - Human Relations in Libraries

This subject introduces human relations skills required by library technicians both as junior staff and first level supervisors. Skills include effective supervision, communication, planning, training and hiring. Employment legislation will be addressed in several areas: labour relations, occupational health and safety, human rights, equity and privacy.

FPL380 - Field Placement II

This is a continuation of FPL 280. Students are required to complete field placement to apply the theory and skills they have learned in semesters one to three and to gain work experience. A typing speed of 30 w.p.m (net) is required.

FPL480 - Field Placement III

This is a continuation of FPL 380. Students are required to complete field placement to apply the theory and skills they have learned in semesters one to four and to gain work experience. This field placement is in a two-week block taken during the final semester. The student should be close to completion of the program when taking the final placement.
