Subject Description

This course takes a holistic approach to the professional event coordination.  Students will develop project management skills needed to plan and execute the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) event sector.   All planning phases an event manager undertakes to successfully conceptualize, develop, plan, execute and evaluate events from beginning to end will be the focus of this course. The global events industry generated $1.100 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach $2.330 billion by 2026 according to Allied Market Research. As the event industry evolves, students will learn, through case studies and virtual planning of the wide variety of elements involved in designing, producing and promoting, of mid to large scale events for the MICE sector. Students will learn how to set objectives, create event concepts, request for proposal process, logistics, co-ordinate team efforts, and complete budget proposals for client presentations. In this course students will understand the return on investment measurement while meeting client expectation.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Hospitality Management - Hotel and Restaurant Diploma Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.       Apply knowledge of event design process by completing a Specification Guide as part of an event design plan.

2.      Understand the relevance of creating strategic goals and objectives as part of an event development processes.

3.      Formulate a Request for Proposal (RFP) to learn how to seek the services of outside vendors to execute events.

4.      Illustrate logistic implementation processes with a creation of an implementation critical path as part of the design plan using Gantt chart template.

5.      Create digital marketing material to promote events online.

6.      Create a budget for an event and develop strategies to generate revenues while ensuring return on investment for the stakeholders.

7.      Understand software technology for meeting site selection, online event registration, event management, email marketing and web surveys.

8.      Demonstrate core competency skills in event design logistics and execution through an online event implementation project.

9.      Identify and discuss zero waste events.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
