Subject Title
Eyeglass Dispensing Lab - Lens Verification

Subject Description
This subject prepares students for work in an optical dispensary. Content includes identifying
single vision lenses based on lens materials and add-ons, measuring lens parameters and
verifying that the single vision eyeglasses meet dispensing industry standards. Measuring
accurately single vision lens parameters using the proper instrumentation is emphasized
throughout this subject.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Opticianry Diploma.

1. Apply protocols for hazards and infection control to ensure a safe lab environment.

1.1 Discuss protocols for hazards control.
1.2 Discuss the protocols for infection control.
1.3 Use of adequate hand washing techniques.
1.4 Use adequate protocols for disinfecting of work spaces, instruments, tools, frames and
lenses.

2. Identify lens materials, designs and treatments and determine the appropriate use for each.
2.1 Exemplify various lens materials including CR-39, crown glass, polycarbonate and hiindex.
2.2 Exemplify various lens designs including spherical, aspherical and atoric.
2.3 Exemplify various types of lens treatments.
2.4 Visually inspect lenses for surface defects.
2.5 Specifies the lens type, material, coating and finishing on a lens order.

3. Use the lens gauge and the lens caliper to measure eyeglass lenses curves and thickness
3.1 Measure lens curves and thickness.
3.2 Measure lenses front and back curves and estimate the total power of the lens.
3.3 Measure lenses center and edge thicknesses.
3.4 Indicate when it is necessary to record base curves on a lens order form.

4. Operate the lensometer to measure the power of uncut lenses.
4.1 Identify the lensometer parts and their functions.
4.2 Verify the calibration of the lensometer.
4.3 Operate the manual and the automated lensometer to neutralize single-vision lenses.
4.4 Mark the optical center of the uncut lenses.

5. Measure with the lensometer the power mounted single vision lenses with and without
prescribed prism.
5.1 Neutralize single vision eyeglass lenses with the manual and auto-mated lensometer
5.2 Determine horizontal and vertical optical center placement.
5.3 Check lenses for the presence of prisms.
5.4 Verify eyeglasses in accordance with ANSI tolerances.
5.5 Interpret findings and record them on a lab work order.

6. Practice procedures for final inspection of single vision eyeglasses based on the ANSI
tolerance chart.
6.1 Performs frame Standard Alignment protocols.
6.2 Measure/Neutralize single vision lenses.
6.3 Distinguish between the lens parameters received from the lab and the ANSI
tolerances and determine the parameters who meet or do not meet the ANSI standard.
6.4 Choose if the eyeglass meet or fail the ANSI standards.

7. Prepare single vision eyeglasses for final inspection and delivery.
7.1 Perform final eyeglass inspection.
7.2 Prepare the eyeglasses for delivery.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
